One Outstanding Question

Have you ever wondered about the secret sauce of coaching? Why it works?

Professional coaches know how to dance in the moment and carefully choose specific questions from an arsenal of experience and training depending on the issue at hand. These questions aid in decision making, goal setting, overcoming obstacles, limiting beliefs, motivation and habit change, facing challenges, defining problems, reframing situations, and more.   I have my favorite questions: “Is that TRUE? What if you could have it ANY way you wanted? What is the HIGHEST and BEST outcome you can IMAGINE in this situation?”   What would you like to LET GO of? What would you like to say about how you handled this 5 YEARS from NOW?

Yet, there is one question that always fits and always adds value to the conversation:

“What are you learning?”

I ask when things are going well because we can build on success and reinforce positive behaviors that drive desired outcomes.

“What are you learning?”

I ask when clients are struggling because it reminds us we still have choice and we can redeem any circumstance by gaining personal growth and development.

“What are you learning?”

I ask when there is a mental block because it takes us out of the box and helps us move forward.

“What are you learning?” is a great question for any age or background, because no matter how different we are or what your Meyers-Brigs profile says, all of us are innately wired to learn. There is something deeply satisfying for all of us in learning.

Ready to test it out? Be sure you position yourself as an equal when you ask. Real results won’t come if you put yourself in the position of the teacher asking your student to recite something you think you already know. The key is to ask and listen and with genuine sense of curiosity. You are learning, too.

“Learning is not simply a by-process of action, it is an equal and complementary force. Learning generates new resourcefulness, expanded possibilities, and stronger muscles for change.”
